THE late DJ Peter "Mashata" Mabuse was remembered and celebrated by friends and family during his memorial service at the State Theatre in Tshwane on Thursday, 25 April.

It was a day marked by grief, pain, and loss, and he was described as a legend.

Mashata was murdered in Soshanguve, Tshwane, on Sunday, 21 April.

His mum, Rebecca Mabuse, said Peter, at eight months old, was already jumping and dancing.

"You took my breadwinner, wena motho," she said.

The family representative and his aunt Margaret Moagi said: "You left us, but your legacy will live on."

Another aunt, Margaret Hlongwane, said: "We will not revenge as we have forgiven the killers."

She said there is someone who will pay revenge for them.

"The killer will come to us in a wheelchair asking for forgiveness, and we will forgive that person," she said.

Mamelodi Sundowns supporter co-ordination manager, Daniel "Mambush" Mudau, said Mashata had a sense of humour.

"Let's make sure we pray for Mama to heal," he said.

"It's a sad one today. We laughed together and had plans to travel together. Let's treasure his life," he said.

His friends appreciated the moment they shared with him.

His tertiary friend Lindiwe Shibambo said they were hurt and that he was a student fighter.

"We are hurt as his friends. The death took us away from our friend and comedian. He was a leader. He didn't die in vain. We are saying enough is enough. Rest in power, and you know your purpose," she said.

TUT representative Dr Shadrack Ntshangeni said that they remember his life and that he lived a very colourful life.

"Peter was the best employee at the university. He brought uniqueness and enthusiasm to the team," he said.

He will be laid to rest at the Zandfontein Cemetery on Sunday, 28 April.
