AFTER a successful first edition of the Basadi In Music Awards (BIMA) last year, people are expecting an even bigger and better second edition.
The awards which premiered last year were all about celebrating women in the South African music industry. Musicians like Lerato Kganyago, Gigi Lamayne, Pabi Cooper, and Lamiez Holworthy walked away with awards.
The founder of the awards, Hloni Modise-Matau spoke to Daily Sun about planning the second edition.
“We've just started the planning, I’m very nervous and scared but I’m confident in the team. Plans are coming together nicely. I’m nervous because I think we set the bar too high last year and everyone wants us to top it.
“There’s a lot of pressure this year. And we want to bring awards of good quality and celebrate women in a good quality way,” she said.

Hloni said the awards will be different compared to last year.
“Three days ago, I thanked God for the opportunity to learn and improve. These coming awards will be perfect because we’re trying to do something different this year. Each year will be different. The format will remain the same, but some things will change. I’m also excited to share this year’s theme, it’ll be exciting,” she said.
BIMA also bagged a partnership with restaurant, Nando’s and Bridges For Music.
“It has been a dream of mine to work with the brand. I’ve been a big admirer of their campaigns and to say we’re working with them, it’s a dream come true. When it happened, I had to pinch myself twice because I couldn’t believe it. They are big on development and that’s what made us excited to work with them,” Hloni said.
She said they don’t want to focus on the glitz and glamour but focus on females in different fields of music.
“This partnership will focus on two categories, Best Newcomer and Best Emerging Artist. We’ll be giving away a scholarship worth R100 000 to a musician who wishes to further their career,” Hloni said.
The awards also celebrated legends in the music industry last year and Hloni said they’ll continue but focus on the development of new musicians.
