THE 1988 South African film, Mapantsula, is returning to screens after 35 years.
This after it was banned by the apartheid government. But the film has been remastered and will be re-released for South African audiences.
The film tells the story of Panic, a petty thief who becomes involved in the anti-apartheid movement.
On Thursday, 10 August Mzansi actors and film lovers celebrated the film at CineCentre in Killarney Mall, Joburg.
Award-winning director Oliver Schmitz, who also directed Mapantsula, told Daily Sun he was excited about the film's return after so many years.
He said it was a dream come true.
"I'm very excited about this as it will be the first time being seen here in South Africa. It was seen outside the country in countries like Germany," he said.
Oliver said this for him means that he has achieved his goal as a storyteller and hopes to get the message across. He said the sad part is that some of the actors who were featured in the film have passed on.

Some of the film's stars include veteran actress Thembi Mshali-Jones as Pat, Peter Sephuma as Duma and Darlington Michaels as Dingaan, and many other great talents.
Peter said this is what he was looking forward to all these years. He said what makes him enjoy this was that it has got what was needed to be shared during that period.
"I believe every generation has a story to tell. In this one, it's ours that we are telling of the things we went through during apartheid. I just want others to go and watch this film. There is more to learn from it and be inspired," said Peter.
