IT'S that time of the year again when Mzansi films and TV shows are celebrated. 

The nominees for the 17th Annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs17) were announced on Tuesday, 8 August. 

How to Ruin Christmas Season 3 scooped 12 nominations. In the TV Comedy categories, the show was nominated for 11 of the 12 categories, including Best TV Comedy, Best Achievement in Scriptwriting and Directing. 

The awards opened for nominations in February 2023 and received 389 entries. 

The River and Legacy from Tshedza Pictures were each nominated in 11 categories. 

Diepe Waters, a new telenovela, received six nominations, as did Suidooster and Binnelanders

DJ Zinhle’s reality show, Unexpected: DJ Zinhle, which won the award for Best Structured Soapie Reality Show in 2022, is nominated again.

It is competing with Young Famous and African S1, Life with Kelly Khumalo Season 3, Living the Dream with Somizi Season 5 and Uthando Nes’thembu

There are only three nominees for the Best Actor in a TV soapie, and they are Clint Brink for Binnelanders, Melusi Mbele for Scandal! And Irvine van der Merwe for Suidooster.

The nominees for Best Actress in A TV Soapie are: 1. Cindy Swanepoel for Binnelanders, 2. Refilwe Madumo for Generations: The Legacy, 3. Elizabeth Serunye for Skeem Saam and 4. Harriet Manamela for Skeem Saam.

The nominees for Best Actress in a Telenovela are: 1. Matshepo Maleme for House of Zwide, 2. Kgomotso Christopher for Legacy, 3. Michelle Botes for Legacy, 4. Jo-Anne Reyneke for The Estate, 5. Tsholofelo Matshaba for The River and 5. Sindi Dlathu for The River.

The nominees for Best Actor in a Telenovela are: 1. Dawid Minnaar for Legacy, 2. Themba Ndaba for Redemption Season 1, 3. Lawrence Maleka for The River and 4. Presley Chweneyagae for The River.

Speaking about the nominations, National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) Acting CEO, Thobela Mayinje, said: "The NFVF is encouraged by the confidence the SA film and television industry is showing to the Saftas.

"The high number of entries speaks volumes about the growth of the SA film and television industry, with new productions making part of the nominees list as well. It is also exciting that this year, industry peers will again be able to interact and celebrate each other in person." 

The main awards ceremony will be broadcast live on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) and S3 from 7pm on Saturday, 30 September.
