ACTRESS Ntokozo Ngcobo is thrilled to be playing the role of Queen Nandi, the mother of King Shaka.
The 34-year-old from Umlazi P section in KZN said she's excited to play the lead role in the play, Nandi The Musical.
She said playing the role of Queen Nandi, while completely transforming into her character, was an exciting journey with many emotions.
"I feel privileged and honoured to be trusted to bring my boundless talent and work ethic to the table, and moreover to do the great task of bringing Queen Nandi to life so truthfully," she said.
Ntokozo said that dressing up in such a remarkable character always teaches her a lot about overcoming life's challenges as a woman.
"The strength, courage and wisdom of Queen Nandi should definitely be preserved and embraced," she said.
She said she previously played a lead role as Queen Ibanathi in an epic South African TV drama series called Ifalakhe, which airs on Showmax.
Ntokozo said it wouldn't have been possible without the good direction and technique of our renowned artistic director Edmund Mhlongo.
She said Nandi The Musical commemorates the resilience of Queen Nandi who raised a great leader of the Zulu people.
"The fact that I've been part of the play from its launch in 2018 to now is a confirmation that I'm doing something right. It's very special to continue to do work that I'm really proud of," said Ntokozo.
She said she follows Zulu customs and adopts most of the values and principles, adding that she was taught to grow up with an optimistic mindset. This has helped her connect with her culture, which is an essential part of her identity.
She has performed in theatre productions such as Hello & Goodbye by Athol Fugard, Dim Dep Musical, Unveiling The Name and Sugar Daddies.
She said the play will be staged at the Soweto Theatre from 25 to 28 January 2024.
