Freshlyground lead singer, Zolani Mahola, has dedicated her latest single to the fight against gender-based violence in Mzansi.
The singer recently became the ambassador for a new anti-GBV project called #GiveHerACrown, which inspired the single.
The single, Remember Who You Are, was released last week and Zolani told SunBuzz about the making of the single.
“When I was thinking about gender-based violence, I thought about how most problems begin at childhood. Oftentimes, as parents, we become rough with our kids.
“We don’t realise that our attitude towards them has an impact on how they’ll be when they grow up.
“So, I imagined a world where kids were brought up in a perfect way.

“Where we make sure that they respect themselves, because then they would respect other kids and people.”
She said as a sexual abuse survivor, she also wanted to include other survivors.
“I wanted survivors to see themselves as still whole, perfect and worthy through this project. That goes a long way in changing the narrative of gender-based violence,” said Zolani.
The singer said she was approached by the company, Change Collective, for their 16 days of activism commemoration.
“The company asked me to be the face of the project. They wanted to create a meaningful and impactful social innovation.”
Zolani is working on her first solo EP, to be released in March next year.
“Even though the inspiration for Remember Who You Are was this campaign, it has now become my first single for the EP. The timing came perfectly, honestly. I’m releasing the music video for the song today (Thursday),” said Zolani.
