Rapper, Kid X has become the latest celebrity victim in a long line of entertainers who have become the target of cybercrime.
In what he calls a “cyber mugging”, the rapper whose real name is Bonginkosi Mahlangu has lost all access to his Instagram page.
This means that none of the posts coming from that page can be taken as authentic until the rapper says otherwise.
Kid X alerted everyone to the crime on Twitter, saying “Just suffered from a cyber mugging. IG account GONE”.
Local celebs seem to have become a target of cyber bullies and thugs who seek to use their names for fraudulent activities.
What the thugs normally do is, once they have gained access to the celebs’s social media account such as Twitter, Instagram and their fave, WhatsApp, they then pose as the account holder and contact the celeb’s friends and family privately.
They then try to extort money out of their contacts, claiming that the person (in this case it would be Kid X), is in need of money urgently.
In other cases, it is simply a matter of hate or trolling, when the hackers gain access to the celeb’s account simply to send out shady content.
Anele Mdoda, Unathi Nkayi, Somizi Mhlongo, and Redi Tlabi are some of the personalities who have all fallen victim to the hackers.
