A fter feeling neglected at maskandi festivals as female artists for a long time, they’ve finally united to start their own events.

Top female maskandi artists Buselaphi Gxowa, Vumile Mngoma, uGlama kaMaskandi and Osukasambe have formed female alliance, Izwi Lembokodo.

They will perform at their first festival next month in Nongoma, KZN. Alliance organiser Buselaphi told SunBuzz their aim was to help each other as women to make money. “I sat down with many female maskandi artists, including Bonakele, Queen Lolly, Vumile, Ndoni, Ndunakazi, uGlama kaMaskandi, Osukasambe and came up with the idea of uniting and making our own festivals so we can put bread on our tables and continue our music journeys.”

They have planned many back-to-back festivals and will start in her hometown at Nongoma Multi-Purpose Hall on 5 March.

“I will also launch the Buselaphi Gxowa Foundation to help up-and-coming artists to face the music industry.

“Before the launch, there will be a workshop for artists. We will follow with the Dr Buselaphi Gxowa Foundation #Yaqhuma Imbadada maskandi festival.”

Buselaphi said the festivals will help rising artists when they get famous and teach them where they can get money as artists.

“It will be sponsored by the National Arts Council, Shesha Mashesha and the Nongoma Municipality.”

The event starts at 9am and costs R30 for general access and 100 VIP.
