IT’S job done and Bidvest Wits head coach Gavin Hunt is happy to have reached his second final with the Clever Boys after they defeated Cape Town City 3-0 on aggregate in the MTN8 semifinals.
The second leg failed to rise to any heights and ended in a tame 0-0 draw at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.
Hunt, in his first season in charge of Wits in 2014, reached the Nedbank Cup final only to lose 3-1 to Orlando Pirates in Durban.
Hunt’s Clever Boys will face the winner of Wednesday’s other semifinal, second leg showdown between Mamelodi Sundowns and Chippa United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium (7.30). The teams drew 0-0 in the first leg played in Port Elizabeth.
Hunt’s Students were never in danger over the two legs after they beat CT City 3-0 at Milpark last weekend.
Said Hunt: “Over the two legs we were full value for our place in the final.”
But he said he would have preferred to have the MTN8 completed before the Absa Premiership kicked off: “The top eight competition clouds the league.”
Hunt said his side created more chances, especially in the first half but the game was virtually dead after the 3-0 win in the first leg. He added: “To their credit CT City created a couple of chances in the second half but we were good value for our place in the final (on 1 October).”
Hunt will be on his travels again: “We are travelling again to Polokwane on Tuesday (tomorrow). This will be our second trip there within a week.”
The Clever Boys drew 0-0 with Polokwane City at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium last Tuesday and tomorrow they go across the road to the new Peter Mokaba Stadium to face PSL rookies Baroka FC in their third Premiership fixture this season.
CT City head coach Eric Tinkler, who faces his former club Orlando Pirates in the league at Orlando Stadium tomorrow, was philosophical after the 0-0 draw.
Said Tinkler: “We struggled in the first half but were better in the second. It’s not easy after losing 3-0, but I’m proud of the boys’ effort.”
