BABY DIES IN STRIKE - MORE MAY FOLLOW

accreditation

A SIX-month-old baby has died in Gauteng as a result of the ongoing strike by social workers.

About 6 000 National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union members have been on strike since last week. There are now fears that more children may die.

One of 90 children moved from the Gauteng Department of Social Development Child and Youth Care Centre died. The baby was removed from the Walter Sisulu centre and placed at another care centre.

The children were moved on Friday as striking workers barricaded entrances to the affected centres, barring essential supplies such as food, medication and clean laundry.

Gauteng social development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza will today update residents of Gauteng on details of the effect of the strike on the province’s frail, disabled and children who are dependent on government for care.
