  • Social media troll says Unathi Nkayi's gym wear has "a lack of decency."
  • Unathi responded and notified the "creep" that her partner and children do not mind seeing her go to the gym in a sports bra.
  • Two personal trainers gave commentary on gym attire, stating that what you wear should be comfortable for exercising.

Clearly you can't do a squat or run on the treadmill with corduroy trousers or jeans on, that would make your gym session quite challenging.

However, it seems like some people are not pleased with women wearing sports bras and tights at the gym, and media personality Unathi Nkayi is one of the most recent socialites who have received backlash for their gym attire.

Unathi boldly responded to the troll, stating that her loved ones don't mind her hitting the gym wearing a comfortable sports bra and that she inspires her kids who are pursuing sports and require consistent training.

We got in touch with two personal trainers to get some expert commentary on gym wear and the importance of comfortability in the gym. This is what they had to say.

Deco Chirwa, sports scientist and personal trainer at Virgin Active, stated that the fabric used for gym clothing is mostly different from our everyday wear.

"It needs to accommodate certain movements such as squats," said Deco, highlighting how wearing clothes made from fabrics such as silk allows efficiency when exercising, stretching, and flexing.

He refers to tights and shorts as being more comfortable for a gym session, compared to jeans.

"A tight jean might hinder your technique. So, the whole point is being able to move freely and being able to do proper techniques," he explained.

Deco says that other than silk materials, you can use "clothes that you would even wear at home that you are comfortable in." Once again, he referred to jeans not being a suitable option for watching a movie in the comfort of your home.

However, Deco cautioned that some well-known gyms are strict when it comes to clothing and have certain regulations for "non-revealing clothes." He says, "You can come with your short pants, but it should be in an appropriate way."

Janine Janse van Rensburg, who is also a personal trainer, said, "For me it's all about how you feel, are you comfortable in your clothing." She stated that sports bras and tights are recommended gym apparel.

Contrary to Deco, Janine said that most gyms do not really dictate what you wear but people should be considerate of others. "You not there to be on a fashion parade, you there to train," she said.
