Moving your tyres around could stretch their lifespan. We explore how to keep them rolling for longer.

To those of us going, ‘what the bleep?’ to the practice of tyre rotation, experts define it as changing a car’s tyres from one position to the next, to ensure that the treads wear out evenly.

Because the weight on the front and rear axles of a car differ significantly, it leads to the tyres wearing out unevenly.

Given that we have varying body weights and unique feet shapes, therefore making us step differently, our shoes are bound to be worn out in different places. Now, apply the same logic to your car.

To even out where and how your tyres get worn, most wheel experts recommend rotating them every 5 000 to 10 000 km.

Smega Molokoane, owner of the Soweto-based Smega’s Auto Repairs, says one factor is the car’s weight distribution, especially if your car is a front-wheel drive.

“Tyres on a front-wheel drive have to carry the steering, braking system as well as the entire weight of both the engine and the front axle. In this instance, the front tyres will wear much quicker than the rear ones,” he says.

Secondly, he explains, incorrect tyre pressure and uneven alignment also shorten the longevity of the tyres.

If your wheels give off a humming sound while driving on a smooth road, then it’s time to rotate them. For those with four-wheel drive vehicles, the rotation will have to take place sooner, at 8000 km.

Here’s why you should add tyre rotation to your maintenance list:

1. It’s safer

You risk losing control of your car’s steering system if your front tyres have bald patches.

2. It evens out the braking system

Your drive will be smoother and fuel consumption will also improve.

3. Tyre purchasing will be easier

Instead of buying tyres based on which pair wears out quicker, you’ll be able to buy all four at the same time.

Also worth noting, according to Continental Tyres, is that, “the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation for the rotation pattern and interval should be followed when rotating tyres.”

Where the manufacturer hasn’t made any specifications, then the generic 5 000 to 10 000 km rule can be adhered to.

Alternatively, you can rotate your tyres when changing from summer to winter tyres — or vice versa.
