BMW has a new compact sports car in the form of the 2 Series range. The butch-looking two-door coupé is built in Mexico and sold here in 220i, 220d and M240i modes – the M240i being the current range-topper.

Few will dispute the 2 Series Coupé’s stature as an attractive proposition in terms of looks, although some may disagree that it is actually pretty. That is possibly because beauty is, of course, in the eye of the beholder. Where all will agree is in performance.

While the 220i is the baseline model with 135kW of power and 300Nm of pulling torque, it is strong in take-off and overtaking. Average fuel consumption is said to be 6.3 litres of petrol per 100km travelled. Because it runs on a quiet diesel engine, the 220d (140kW, 400Nm) is expectedly more frugal, averaging 5.1 litres per 100km. Diesel burns more slowly than petrol, therefore it lasts longer.
