'It has done more for Afrikaans than any curriculum' - SA reacts to 7de Laan officially being cancelled

After 23 years on air, it’s time for fans to say goodbye to the beloved Afrikaans soapie 7de Laan.

In an announcement made by the show’s official twitter page on 17 July 2023, the SABC has decided to conclude the longstanding show after the 24th season’s finale set to air on 26 December 2023.

In the statement released by SABC 2, 7de Laan’s executive producer Thandi Ramathesele says, “It is bittersweet to say goodbye, but we are filled with pride for the impact that 7de Laan has had on our society, addressing important social issues and fostering inclusively, the has made its mark on South African television. Thank you for being a part of this remarkable journey with us.”

Since its debut on 4 April 2000, 7de Laan has garnered a large and loyal following of viewers who relish in the happenings of the Hillside residents.

Created more than two decades ago by Danie Odendaal, viewers were treated to the bustling life of the Oppiekoffie Coffee Shop managed by the iconic Charmaine Beukes (played by Vinette Ebrahim until the character’s exit in 2019) and her rivalry with Hilda (played by Annelisa Weiland), turbulent relationships and the all-round aura of family.

Fans took to social media to express their shock and pen emotional words since learning the news of the end of the iconic series, with many hoping for past characters to make a comeback for the final episodes.
