If you’re in the market for a new set of wheels, we have a sleek car selection for you to choose from.

1. Jeep Grand Cherokee L

Jeep is slowly trying to get back into our heads and pockets, and this new Grand Cherokee L (L stands for “long”) means business. At an extreme 5.2 metres long, the car shows a road presence like few others. It is unmistakably a Jeep, with the seven-slot grille flanking the sleek LED headlights. The V6 engine is powerful enough, although we think a turbo would make it a more efficient and stronger drive. Nevertheless, Jeep has spared no effort to make occupants comfortable, thanks to a long list of features, comfy seats and a new infotainment system that gives the front passenger their own personal touchscreen.

2. BMW 7 Series

China is BMW’s biggest market, and the brand’s latest designs are geared towards Chinese tastes more than any other. This is also true for the new 7 Series Sedan with its massive front end, narrow headlights and lots of chrome accents. While the looks may polarise, the equipment and technology certainly will not. The 7 Series is the most advanced BMW road car ever built. With a choice of powertrains – petrol, diesel and all-electric – there is plenty of choice to suit all tastes. The interior is one of the plushest we have ever seen in a car, the pièce de résistance being the huge 78.8cm rear seat screen, which folds down from the roof.

Price from: R2.1 million.

3. Range Rover Sport

The sportiest Range Rover has become much more elegant, showing smoother lines overall, while the front end has retained some of its aggressiveness. The Range Rover Sport bears a great deal of resemblance to its big sister, the Range Rover – understandably so – but remains a distinctive vehicle. BMW has contributed a powerful V8 engine to this vehicle. The rest comes straight from parent company, Land Rover, including the crystal-clear Pivi Pro infotainment display, Terrain Response 2 off-road system, deployable door handles with proximity sensor, and Cabin Air Purification Pro, which keeps the interior air clean and fresh.

Price from: R2 million.

4. Toyota Land Cruiser 300

Toyota’s biggest car in the country is also the brand’s most capable. Completely redesigned from the previous generation, the LC300 is big and tall – two prerequisites for a vehicle that is expected to perform in all environments, including desert sand, snow and mud – hence the affectionate nickname Master of Africa. Power comes from two powerful V6 engines, available as petrol or diesel. The LC300 is an imposing presence both on and off the road and is a real eye-catcher. The features are plentiful, as is the interior space, thanks in part to the generous legroom and seven-seat configuration. If ever there was an “all-rounder” in the daily car park, the new LC300 is it.

5. Volkswagen Tiguan R

The Tiguan has been one of the most popular SUVs in Mzansi since its launch. The new model now has a range-topping R variant that offers more performance than previous models. The Tiguan R shares its powertrain with the Golf R and is aimed at buyers who want to stand out from the rest of the Tiguan family, thanks to a sportier exterior and more eye-catching interior. The four exhaust tailpipes hint at the car’s intentions, which is to carry families and their luggage while keeping up with other, less practical, sporty cars. It brings the proverbial “vrrrrr pha” to the family SUV market.

Price from: R1 million.
