The frow (front row) took a collective bow when the models at Dior’s Couture Autumn/Winter 2024 collection stepped out in straight-back cornrows with a structural low bun.

This was a first on the international stage for a designer to hire braiders to plait models with natural hair instead of forcing the hair straight to resemble a sleek back style. This was, indeed, a sign that this style is back and bigger than before and has shaken off its “protective style” reputation.

On the red carpet, Michaela Coel screamed royalty at the 2023 Met Gala, cementing the ethereal theme.

Here’s how to participate in the trend without compromising your hair:

1. The prep work

Make sure you wash and condition your scalp and hair prior to plaiting it. Don’t blow-dry the hair till it’s straight; rather give it a light dry and focus on hydration. If you have a dry flaky scalp, it’s important to base it with a nourishing hair food or scalp oil to avoid flakes that make the style look unsightly.

2. Avoid tension

If your scalp is itchy and you feel pain or a slight tingling – the plaits are too tight. And, don’t be afraid to tell your hairstylist. If they don’t listen, it’s time to change stylists. Tension leads to hair breakage and traction alopecia, which is very difficult to reverse. Then it’s hello to hairline woes!

3. Set in place

Post braiding, apply a small amount of foaming mousse and make sure that you sleep with a silk bonnet to keep the look neat. If you feel that the finish is a little dull, a little oil sheen spray will do the trick.

4. Grease vs hydration

The greasier your hair and scalp get, the more you’ll have to wash it, meaning goodbye cornrows. Apply oil liberally if you have a naturally oily scalp.

5. With or without fibre

Whether you choose to plait your natural hair or supplement the style with fibre, the kind of fibre you use is important. Synthetic hair has evolved over the decades but go for a quality that won’t break your own hair.
