Denim is a fashion staple and a wardrobe essential for most people.

It’s never a question of if denim should be worn but rather how and there’s no denying that this versatile fabric is a trend that outlasts many others.

The oversized look, low and loose, and dark wash denim are making waves at the moment. Throughout the years designers such as Glenn Martens, designer of Diesel and Blumarine, are fond of denim clothing items and using it in a number of their collections.

We ‘ve seen the likes of Beyoncé and Rihanna rocking trend-defining denim looks.

When it comes to the 411 on denim outfits, buying high quality washes/styles is essential for longevity - but this doesn't necessarily mean you need to beak the bank. In fact, some of the best denim you'll find is vintage.

According to Harpers Bazaar, denim is not only a universal base to build upon with other pieces, it also strikes the perfect balance between dressed up and down to earth during high-temperature days when the dress code is inherently more easygoing.

Oversized fit

Oversized denim jackets and shirts dominate the fashion streets, making a bold statement in the world of fashion.

According to G-Star Raw, this trend embraces the power of volume and structure, offering a refreshing departure from the fitted silhouettes of the past. Whether layered over a sleek dress or paired with matching denim bottoms for a fresh take on the Canadian tuxedo, or jean-to-jean as we know it in South Africa, the oversized fit is a hot trend that is hard to miss.

Low-rise and loose fit

The low and loose denim trend isn't going anywhere, setting the stage for a revolution in contemporary fashion. This season, relaxed-fit jeans redefine style with their nonchalant drape and laid-back aesthetic.

Dark wash denim

The secret to any iconic capsule wardrobe is a pair of medium blue. However, 2023 has seen dark wash denim making a strong comeback.

This inherently versatile wash effortlessly transitions from casual ensembles paired with a simple shirt to more elevated looks with boots and a jacket. Seen recently in elite fashion spaces worldwide, dark wash denim continues to captivate with its undeniable allure.

We spoke to two fashion stylists, freelance stylist and personal shopper Tondani Ragwala and Cape Town-based stylist Prince Nhlengethwa, who give us the dos and don’ts wearing a denim look.

Dos

1. Do buy your favorite denim style in all washes. Trust me this comes in handy when you need an outfit pronto, says Prince.

2. Do tailor your denim to fit perfectly. It looks better and makes you feel your best when your clothes fit perfectly. No tugging etc.

3. Do a Canadian tuxedo in updated silhouettes, this will keep it fresh and modern.

4. Do wear your types of denim with simple basics. Nothing will ever beat types of denim with a white shirt or white T-shirt. Always play with silhouettes and textures to keep it interesting.

5. Do indulge in a trendy or special piece once in a while. Currently loving the patchwork trend.- wear denim with white - white and denim is a match made in heaven! So if it's jeans with a white top and a denim jacket then you’re ready to go.

6. A full denim outfit. not many people are for this but it really works- “I would even push the boundaries and put a cute denim corset like top with it”, says Tondani.

7. Use chucky or bold accessories when wearing denim - if it's just jeans and a top or even if you are doing a full denim outfit.

Don'ts

1. Wearing ripped jeans with a ripped denim jacket is a definite no-no, says Tondani.

2. If you want to mix and match denim, definitely go for it but also shy away from mixing very light denim washes with very dark like black denim

3. I'm not a huge fan of overly ripped jeans - if you're going for a tighter fit jean make sure the size is tight for a flattering look.

4. Avoid wearing skinny jeans with a very tight top. Don’t ever purchase the wrong size even though the low rise is making a huge comeback. Love handles peeping out your cropped low-rise and cropped golf t-shirt were left in the 2000s, Prince says.

5. Don’t buy low-quality denim styles or washes. You will wear them more. You need longevity. Good quality is an investment.

6. Don’t invest in overly trendy denim with heavy distressing and embellishments. Denim is part of your wardrobe basics. It must be easy to style with most pieces in your wardrobe.

7. Don't forget to take good care of your denim. The kinder you are to your pair, the longer it will last. Always read the care label.
