  • A stylist shares mini skirts are great for transitional outfits because of how versatile they are.
  • Try trendy looks like a mini skirt paired with oversized coats.

It feels like we just blinked and we’re already swapping out sheer summer dresses and crop tops for knitted jerseys and beanies.

The autumn/winter season has officially arrived with otherworldly winds and rain showers and while dressing for transitional seasons can be a bit tricky but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your style essentials.

One of these style essentials that can still be carried over to other seasons are mini skirts.

The best part of wearing skirts in the cooler weather is just how versatile they can be. You could go the quintessential chic girl route with a checkered skirt, scarf and knee-high sock combo or give your style more of a grunge girl look with a leather mini skirt, chunky boots and oversized coat.

Whatever style suits you, there’s a mini skirt to match.

Tondani Ragwala, a fashion designer and wardrobe stylist who has put together looks on shows like Big Brother Titans, agrees and lets us know why mini skirts are still so on trend even as the weather dips.

“Mini skirts are still popular in the autumn/winter season because they have been a staple for many years, we also all feel absolutely good in one. A mini skirt is also perfect for those transitional outfits because you just have to switch out a few items you pair with it,” Tondani explains.

Different mini skirt stylings for autumn/winter

1. Throw on some pantyhose or stockings

An age-old trick to keep warm and fashionable when the temperature drops is layering and this is exactly what you’ll need to do to get your favourite mini skirt autumn ready.

“Okay, number one is definitely stockings – we don’t want those legs to freeze now,” Tondani advises.

2. Boots galore

A warm pair of boots can take your look to the next level for any occasion. Fur-trimmed thigh high boots will add a touch of glamour and thick-soled knee-highs will take you to your punk era.

Tondai says, “Knee high boots and an oversized jersey will never do you wrong. A mini skirt can be paired with boots, a tights tops/jersey with a blazer or a coat.”

3. Toeing the edge

Shaking things up with an all-leather affair is a surefire way to keep warm while still looking sexy.

“An edgy look is pairing the mini skirt, stockings, tight top, oversized leather jacket and some Doc Martens,” Tondani shares.

4. Keeping it cute

There are a ton of variations you can play with to keep your outfit looking whimsical and still brave the cold.

Tondani tells us that “[a] mini skirt, stockings and some socks or leg warmers with loafers, a jersey or blazer is also perfect. [A] mini skirt over some long pants/jeans is also on a trend right now and very edgy with a tight long sleeve top and a blazer or jersey."

“If you're going on a little night out or date, some knee-high sock boots and a tight jersey top with a coat is also a really cute look.”
