It is often said that there is no love in this world that is greater than that of a mother’s love for her child. We're set to see mothers all over South Africa being honoured by their children as the country celebrates Mother’s Day this Sunday.
Apart from the spoils, most mothers look forward to reflecting on their journeys into parenthood.
TRUELOVE spoke to 8 celebrity moms to find out what motherhood has taught each of them:
Moonchild Sanelly
“One of the biggest lessons that motherhood has taught me is that I have to win because these are the minds that I am molding for the future. I want to raise my daughters to be women that don’t tolerate nonsense and just win in life. I’ve also learnt not to give up as a mother.”
Zola Nombona
“Motherhood made me realise how much I’ve been downplaying my power. It revealed to me how strong and mailable I am. It has shown me that I’m actually a really powerful being. I enjoy the unconditional love that comes with being a mother.”
Zinhle Mabena
“Motherhood has taught me patience. Children have a tendency of doing their own thing and it just teaches you patience in having to deal with them. I’ve become more tolerant and my outlook on life has also changed. Having children has also taught me how to fight and how to protect. Watching my children develop and have these crazy personalities and watching them grow has been such a joy. Watching them discover what they want for themselves and all of that coming together has been an amazing and entertaining experience.”

“I have learnt to trust myself and to continue being myself as a way to give love as a mother. There are so many things I enjoy about being a mom but currently, because I have a small child, I enjoy breastfeeding the most. This is especially because I couldn’t breastfeed with my first son but now that I’ve mastered it with this child, I’m definitely enjoying it.”
Gugu Khathi
“Motherhood has taught me that your blessings can only be counted once you see your children being healthy, strong and happy. You start to become more appreciative of life and look at it through a different perspective and no longer take things for granted. My life everyday is to wake up and push hard but the one thing I look forward to each day everyday, no matter the time, is my children seeing me. They never go to bed without seeing me and everyday their energy is the same. They run up to the car and hug me. No matter how bad my day goes, I know I have that to look forward to at the end of each day.”
Rami Chuene
“I’ve learnt that there’s no formula to parenthood, there’s no blanket approach because even though they’re your children, you’re still dealing with individuals with unique talents, intellect and needs. What I enjoy most about being a mother is watching my kids grow and experience life differently, coming into their own. It’s seeing their zest and love for life, in spite of mistakes or challenges. It’s in the watching of them get up and try again, then win. It’s in how they trust and choose to run to me first. Most of all, it’s in how they love me.”

“I won't lie, I struggle with mother’s day because of having lost a mom. I even stay off social media because the day can get to me at times but I know it will change when Alakhe can plan what he wants to do for me, not coerced but his own decision. But being a mother has changed me because I now know what I want from people who say they love me because those are the things I give my son.”

“Being a mother means I am a superstar even on my worst days. The words 'courage', 'truth', and 'love' come to mind when I think about what motherhood has taught me. Motherhood has taught me gratitude. Grateful for the heartbeats in my life. I am stronger and wiser and happier. The most important thing in life is to be true to yourself. I look at my children at times and how they carried me when times were tough and all they wanted from me was unconditional love .I learned that sensitivity is my superpower. I cry as much as I laugh and my kids love that about me and even tease me about being a softie yet toughie.”
