Not even 'Stiga' could have predicted that Mamelodi Sundowns' Uruguayan sensation Gaston Sirino would romp to the top of the goal scoring charts following his Man of the Match display against Nedbank Cup debutants NB La Masia.
Sirino netted a hattrick in a 6-1 demolishing of La Masia to catapult himself to the top of the scoring charts.
In addition to the Sundowns star, Fredericks has backed the perennial big boys in Evidence Makgopa, Ashley Du Preez and Bradley Grobler to stake their claim amongst the sharpest shooters in this year's Nedbank Cup.
" [Zakhele] Lepasa, you know what he can do, but I think Evidence Makgopa is in the running for the top goal scorer. He’s come back from the Nations Cup, full of confidence. There's talk of him going to Europe. As a striker, he’s judged on the goals he scores. So, I think Makgopa is up there," he said in conversation with Nedbank's Primo Baloyi.
"Bradley Grobler. You cannot count him out. 36 years old, one of the most experienced strikers in the league. He can't stop scoring goals and you know that Gavin Hunt knows how to win, so he won't be happy last season, they lost to Dondol Stars, so he doesn't want that again and you will need goals and who's your striker? It is certainly going to be Bradley Grobler up there.”
"So when you think you should think where's the goals going to come from? [Ranga] Chivaviro has he scored, big question…Ashley Du Preez. He might be missing goals, but I would rather have a striker that is taking chances, that's creating chances. The goals will come. Just like when he was at Stellenbosch. The first season when we found out who Ashley Du preez was, he scored three goals that season. The following season, [he scored] nine goals," he said.
