With the dates of the next Africa Cup of Nations tournament yet to officially be announced, CAF's secretary general has made a big admission regarding rumours surrounding the continental showpiece.

During his final press conference at the 2023 AFCON, the president of African football's governing body, Patrice Motsepe, was unable to confirm when the next edition of the showpiece would be held.

The 2025 tournament was mooted to be hosted during the off-season for clubs, but with the FIFA Club World Cup set to be held between June and July, it seems CAF will need to work around that competition, which will have an increased number of 32 teams participating for the first time.

CAF secretary general Veron Mosengo-Omba stated as such when journalists asked him recently if there was any clarity on when the AFCON that will be hosted in Morocco will be held, but he emphasised the need to work in line with whenever the Club World Cup concludes before confirming a day.

"Even CAF doesn't yet know when the competition will take place…!" the CAF chief told members of the media, as per Afrique Sports.

"You know, 2025 will be the year of the first edition of the FIFA Club World Cup with 32 teams. We need to know the exact date of the final.

"Not to mention that after this competition, players will need to rest. (…) Discussions are still ongoing. If you hear a date for AFCON 2025, know that it's not official.
