The reigning Premier Soccer League footballer of the year Percy Tau has continued where he left off by clinching the 2019 Proximus League Player of the Season award in Belgium.
On loan from English Premier League outfit Brighton Hove & Albion, Tau has taken the Belgium second tier league by storm. Banging in 11 goals and assisting a further 13 times. It can be said that the former Mamelodi Sundowns attacker’s story is a classical ‘started from the bottom tale’.
A mere three years ago, Tau was plying his trade in the reserves league MultiChoice Diski Challenge and is now conquering European football.
It is not by fluke that the talented Bafana Bafana international is enjoying his life in Belgium. Tau has been playing at the highest level in Africa prior his move to Europe. Also, the 2016 CAF Champions League winner with Sundowns still has greater heights to achieve in his career. Benni McCarthy is the only South African footballer to win the coveted UEFA Champions League but it won't be long before Tau begin to reach similar heights.
With a number of South African exports returning prematurely hopefully Tau won't add to this nasty statistic. Home sick footballers often lack the ambition to compete at the highest level. Tau is eager to do well in Europe and that alone should inspire the upcoming footballers to emulate the star.
Tau is a beacon of hope to other South African footballers who aspire to ply their trades abroad. What Percy has done is what 'lions' do, they conquer!
