Morocco boss Walid Regragui etched his name into the history books when he achieved a massive FIFA World Cup feat during the Atlas Lions' stunning round of 16 victory over Spain on Tuesday evening.

The African nation reached the quarter-finals of the showpiece in Qatar after beating Spain 3-0 in a penalty shootout following a 0-0 stalemate in the first 120 minutes of their last 16 clash.

The victory ensured that Morocco are now heading to the last eight of a World Cup for the first time ever.

According to ESPN, the unexpected result also means that Regragui is now the first African coach ever to lead a nation from the continent to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Cameroon, Senegal and Ghana had reached the same stage in previous World Cups, but all three nations had European coaches at the time

This edition of the showpiece was particularly unique for Africa as all five participating nations were managed by tacticians from their respective countries.

Following the monumental win, Regragui lauded Sevilla star Yassine Bounou for his goalkeeping heroics during the tie.

"When you have a goalkeeper like we have, then you have every chance of going through, even though it's a risk to go through penalties," the Moroccan tactician said, per ESPN

"We knew that we had tremendous support behind us and we drew from that energy tonight."
