Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed how he became a coach for the first time in his life while he was just a captain of an U15s team.

The story

Arguably the best young manager in South Africa, Mokwena’s reputation as one of the leading coaches on the continent has exponentially grown over recent seasons. In October 2022, he was named as the sole head coach of the Masandawana after his stint alongside Manqoba Mngqithi and Steve Komphela.

The move yielded incredible results, as the former Mokwena has blossomed on his own, enchanting the passionate Downs supporters. He guided the side to the 2022/23 DStv Premiership title and more notably, the inaugural African Football League - which has understandably cast an even bigger spotlight on him from across the continent.

The tremendous job he has done is even reflective on the South African national team, as 10 Sundowns players were named in Hugo Broos’ squad. The Brazilians’ influence on the Bafana Bafana team has earned huge plaudits from many across Africa, as they have helped inspire Mzansi to their best showing at the Africa Cup of Nations since 2000.

Now a superstar coach and tactical nerd, Mokwena has revealed a surprising fact about how his burgeoning career started while he was just a minor.

Speaking to the FIFA Training Centre, he said that he decided to take it upon himself to coach the U13 team while he was the captain of the U15 team after noticing that they had been without a manager.
