With preparations for the resumption of the season already underway, 2022/23 MTN8 champions Orlando Pirates took some time out to do something really meaningful this week. Here's a look.

The story

The Soweto giants held a walk this week in protest against one of South Africa's most pertinent issues, Gender-Based Violence. The scourge of GBV has haunted the country for many decades, however, in the last seven years or so, the problem has heightened, with many women and children losing their lives at the hands of violent men.

The Orlando team has now stood in solidarity with all the victims and those continuing the fight against femicide and women abuse.

Speaking at the event, Bucs captain Innocent Maela said (via Pirates' official Instagram): "Today we are here at Vodacom will all the other teams in partnership with Vodacom. Today we took a walk in a fight against Gender-Based Violence, making sure we keep the fight alive."

"It means a lot to me when we take a stand and get to fight and be part of such initiatives - to fight against Gender-Based Violence in public areas, especially in public schools to make sure we create a nice and free environment so that the learners can learn to their fullest potential.

"Personally, it means a lot to see our country end this violence."

Ready for a return to action

The team's confidence will obviously be boosted by their recent MTN8 Cup triumph heading into the second half of the season. Jose Riveiro's side hasn't looked particularly impressive in the league, as they only registered five wins from their 13 matches played so far.

Currently the outfit sits fifth on the table, nine points adrift from log-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
