About the artist

He's known for his lyricism, catchy hooks and deep voice that has girls go out of their minds when he's on stage. Rapper Kwesta, born Senzo Vilakazi, is among the musos who have made South African rap a force to be reckoned with.

His sound has evolved from his first studio album, Dakar and over the years, he's managed to release five albums that have South Africans placing him as one of the great rappers to ever grace the country.

He has won six South African Music Awards (SAMA), four South African Hip-hop awards, as well as a Metro FM award and MTV music award.

What we think

His fifth studio album, g.o.d Guluva is nothing short of creative genius. It infuses different sounds such as elements of amapiano, base guitars, and a variety of instruments to create a new sound without taking the attention away from his lyrical bars and hooks.

One thing about Kwesta, he knows how to create a great hook that will linger in your mind long after you have put your headset down.

His songs are catchy and vibrant. His lyrics have always been hard-hitting, as he tells eKasi stories of poverty, love, and bouncing back from hardship.

Let’s start with the intro Thandazani, which features Xhosa rapper Yanga Chief. It's a song about love and acquiring money and it really sets the tone for the album.

Kwesta seems to have taken things up a notch, as the album is completely different from his previous releases. It shows how lyrically, he keeps getting better.

It's hard to pick a favourite song, but Snakes in the Crib, Phuma Sathane, Fire in the Ghetto, Kubo and Hamba Nawe stand out.

Phuma Sathane is a song you want listen to when you start your day. It'll prepare you to tackle any negative energy that may try to steal your groove. It’s about rebuking the devil and commanding the presence of God and you might even find yourself screaming Hallelujah!

Kwesta switches from the club vibe to give you food for thought that will take you on an introspective journey. The topical issues and nuances of life should get the nod from his fans and make a few new ones in the process.
