He is striking while the iron is still hot.

Initially, many did not see him coming and when he eventually emerged, he not only topped the charts but scooped awards.

Ever since his Vula Mlomo hitsong which went double platinum, Musa “Keys” Makamu has never looked back.

Previously when he spoke to Drum about his annual homecoming festival which was cancelled last minute due to unforeseen circumstances, he said: “Ever since I started becoming super active [in the music industry] three years ago, I’ve never really stopped or went home to give back or have a show just to show people back home what I think the best version of me is. It’s just been my dream also to sell out arenas, to sell out stadiums. I love giving people an experience, that’s where I’m going with my brand.”

Musa made a promise to himself to win the award when he started making music.

“From the year that I’m going to win a Grammy, I will win a Grammy every year going on.”

A few days after, he was announced as a Best African Performance Grammy award nominee alongside Davido for their Unavailable song which has been streamed over 100 million teams, as though he was manifesting it.

At a nomination cocktail party hosted by Grammy-award winning Zakes Bantwini on Tuesday, 23 January, he says that he is still confident that he’s bringing the prestigious award back home.

“I’m taking it all the way to the top. I’m confident about it.”

Talking about the making of the hit song, he says that Davido sent him a DM to let him know that he was working on an album that he wants to have him on.

“I don’t like making music via mediums, texting you to give me a beat and I send it back, no. I prefer being with you in studio, but I didn’t explain this to him, I just ignored him. He then told me that he can’t release the album without me.”

Shortly after this, he went to Amsterdam for a show and the night before the show, he went out to a club where he bumped into Davido and his team.

As soon as they spotted him, “they got so happy and told me how they needed me”.

Eventually he was sold to the idea, and they worked on it without being in the studio together.

Now that their song has blown up on an international scale, their chats are different.

“Every time we link up, he says we need to drop an EP so that might possibly be what’s coming through. Now that I’ve reached this point, I’m expecting my songs to be bigger than this.

With the countdown to the Grammy awards ceremony on 4 February 2024, the fashionista musician says he already has a “classy bad boy”.
