It has been two months since rapper Riky Rick died and he may be gone, but he will not be forgotten.

One of his friends, Robot Boii, real name Mzwakhe Mbuli Junior, speaks to Drum ahead of CottonFest happening in Newtown Johannesburg over the weekend.

“It is going to be more than a show, it is going to be an experience,” says Robot Boii, who will also be performing.

“People can really expect to have a great time at CottonFest, it will be everything and more. There will also be new faces so there will be something for everyone.”

CottonFest is the brainchild of the late Sidlukotini hitmaker, real name Rikhado Makhado, and his friend says as people who were close to him, they want to honor Riky.

He died by suicide on 23 February. Riky Rick debuted Cotton Fest in 2019 and the festival is for the young, creative, and fashionable generation, who labelled themselves as “Cotton Eaters” because of their love for fashion.

“We are even getting together as his friends to see what we can do to honour him.”

How does it feel to perform at CottonFest without Riky?

“The initial feeling is heartbreak. But when I remember the type of person he was, I know that he would have wanted us to keep operating. So this feels like we are continuing his legacy and he lives on.”

The Oksalayo rapper says he will be giving an enticing performance at CottonFest. He is a rapper and dancer.

“My vibe is for everyone, at all age groups. Kids love me and even abo gogo say I make them dance. I am the type of person who has range and my energy is all love.

“Dancing is my first love. I am able to draw more crowds through dance than through rapping. Not everyone understands what they hear, but everyone understands what they see,” he adds.

The lineup has the best of both rap and amapiano artists who will be performing for two days.
