DJ Boonu is a veteran DJ with a following as expansive as his catalogue.

He has worked with some of the brightest talents in Durban and has anthems that still ring out on the streets like Abangani Bami and Uswidi Wodwa to name but two.

Videos have popped up on social media of Boonu exploring his passion for cooking but with a slight twist, using one key ingredient - beer.

Cooking is something the 40-year-old from Umlazi has always enjoyed.

“Growing up my mom loved cooking and honestly, what I learned from her is that it’s not about the actual cooking but mostly about the warmth and love of the person who’s doing the cooking and through that I fell in love with the concept of preparing meals for people that are dear to me and of course, I also love a good meal anytime of the day,” he chuckles.

Artistry is something he strives towards in all aspects of his life, “Before anything else, I’m an artist, with a speciality in DJing, so innovation is one of my strong points. I decided to try out this interesting recipe when I felt like trying out something new to discover what the result would be if one experiments, and the result was super amazing to say the least.”

The use of beer is not something that is unheard of when it comes to cooking especially throwing a little on to the braai.

“I love my beer on a beautiful Durban sunny day.”

There are a few foods that come to mind that make sense to cook with in a beer solution but the viral video of Boonu using this technique features an unexpected food type.

“The video that went viral is of me frying a scrambled egg, which was super delicious. The second recipe I was cooking chicken wings with beer which also tasted like nothing I have eaten before.”

Apparently, any beer will do and Boonu stands boldly behind this, “It’s delicious, it’s something people will have to try out themselves, but those I have cooked for using the same method were surprised and thus blown away by the end result of my mostly healthy dishes as I do not cook with oil.”

He is adamant that any beer can be used to cook with, but he prefers a Heineken brew for his dishes.

“It’s simple, use beer to fry an egg the normal way, pour just enough beer until the egg or wings are cooked to perfection. Prawns and Lobster were good as well and I have also cooked rice which came out amazingly.”

This isn’t something he simply stumbled across as he is always looking for ways to enhance the pass time of cooking, which he thinks many people can find mundane.

“You have to be a natural cook; it takes paying attention to detail and being driven by the desire to see it work.”

Admittedly this is something that cropped up while he was a little bored and so he decided to post his efforts.

Content creation may be all the rage right now, but what’s better than that is creating a stream of revenue which is what Boonu realises as well.

“My team is in talks with a few brands I can’t mention right now,” he reveals with a cheeky smile.

Clearly, he is passionate about providing his body with exciting nourishments and he is still using this to fuel his creative output as he has been hard at work in the studio. The fusion of beer and food is cute and all but he’s in the process of blending two other flavours that could go well together, gqom and amapiano.

“I’m a Durbanite, so you can expect a gqom sound while we work on collaborating with amapiano artists on my soon to be released full body of work.

“I also have a single that is currently out on digital platforms titled Dokotela featuring the late great Mampintsha. Look out for the music video on your TV screens soon.”
