She's a national icon. She's been making music for over three decades, has represented the country on world stages and sold millions of albums.

Now she's getting one of the president's high honours. Gospel star Rebecca Malope will be honoured with the order of Ikhamanga in silver. The accolade  recognises South African citizens who have excelled in the fields of arts, culture, literature, music, journalism, and sport.

The presidency said in a statement that she would be receiving the order in silver for her distinguished contribution to South African music and "her unique voice brings joy and comfort to many through meaningful gospel music".

Mam’ Rebecca was recently awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by Nigerian magazine, Clima. This is in addition to the 21 South African music awards she has won over the years amongst, others she cannot fully recollect.

She retired from music after 36 albums and multiple awards. Speaking to Drum recently, she said that she decided to retire to give young talent space to grow.

“The next generation needs our help. It’s always great to give others a chance. I will be working behind the scenes. I will give young artists some advice,” she said about her future plans.

She said she now gets the opportunity to make up for lost time with her children and grandchildren.

“I have enough time to spend with my family, I get to witness my grandchildren grow up,” she told Drum.

“I am bonding with my kids as well. I‘ve never had this time, I was on the road all the time. I grew up on stage and I never had family time. My children grew up around strangers while I was performing. It’s a great feeling to spend time with them.”
