THE Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI, which was launched in South Africa last year, is now available with the iconic Clark Plaid Jacara fabric seats that feature a check pattern design.

The classic checked design was produced by the first woman to work in the Volkswagen design department, Gunhild Liljequist.

For Liljequist, black was a sporty enough colour, but she was also looking for a second colour with a powerful and sophisticated effect and thus settled on the colour red. That marked the origin of what is now known as the Clark Plaid pattern which is still available in the Golf GTI, eight generations later.
