FOR over 15 years, residents have been complaining about the bad condition of their road.
And the recent heavy rainfall made the condition of road D3179 in Medingen in Ga-Kgapane, Limpopo, even worse.
The road now has huge potholes, making it difficult for vehicles to move around. They are now calling for the road to be properly reconstructed. They said the potholes pose a huge risk to their kids’ lives as they play in them.
Peter Kganyago (37) said everything comes to a standstill every time it rains.
“It becomes very difficult to move around in a vehicle, so public transport drivers opt not to come to our village to protect their vehicles from being damaged,” he said.
Residents said they have been engaging with government officials countless times to reconstruct the road, but there were no results.
“Graders sometimes come after heavy rainfall and fill the potholes with sand, but it gets washed away when it rains again. It now takes over 40 minutes to reach a local township on a trip that takes 10 minutes. Ambulances and police take hours to reach our area during emergencies,” said Katlego Maimela (29).

Residents believe the road has reached its lifespan and poses a serious danger to motorists.
Public works, roads and infrastructure spokesman Witness Tiva said they’ve appointed a contractor who is busy with site establishments.
“The state of the road has prompted the department to appoint a contractor who will rehabilitate the road as it links a lot of villages,” said Tiva.
