A few people imagine themselves hitting the road in an electric car (EV), right?

But why?

Because we have a strong market for pre-owned, affordable cars.

According to George Mienie, CEO of Autotrader who spoke to SunWheels, the EV’s daily running costs are also lower than that of an internal combustion powered car.

“This, together with increased range and a growing public EV charging network, including popular long-distance holiday routes, is boosting the number of car shoppers considering an EV as their primary car,” said Mienie.

One of the more affordable and earlier EV entrants locally, the BMW i3 is the most listed, a 2019 model with an average mileage of just 44 600km is listed for around R667 000.

The quirky hatchback has a 246km range.

About R600 000 buys you an irresistible little city hatch with significantly less mileage. 2020 models of the iconic MINI Cooper SE come with a claimed range of 217km.

A seven-year-old Nissan Leaf that has travelled a mere 23 000km and with the range of 170km is the most affordable, listing for about R385 000.

Deep pockets are required for a Porsche Taycan, with a low mileage 2021 model setting buyers back around R3,1 million.

Expect to pay between R3,4 million to R2,3 million for the current year, low mileage Audi e-tron SUV variants with ranges between 369km and 472km, or R1,4 million for a 2020 Jaguar I-Pace with 15 000km on the clock and a claimed 470km range.
