Government once made a call for South Africans to learn the AU anthem as a means to eradicate xenophobia.
Ending xenophobia requires a lot more than rhetoric.
Social cohesion requires more than just singing an anthem.
How does the minister expect people to sing the AU anthem when they fail to sing their own?
Moreover, the South African national anthem doesn’t even include all official languages.
That on its own exposes our failure to celebrate the diversity that underpins our democratic principles.
What are we saying about the languages that are not included in our national anthem?
Do we expect the speakers of those languages to sing the anthem with pride? No!
