HOSTEL dwellers have sleepless nights and are afraid even to leave their rooms.
The hostel dweller's fear at Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi, south of Durban, was triggered by the shootings. On Wednesday, 7 June, a man who lives in this hostel was shot dead while on his way to work.
It is alleged that unknown gunmen opened fire at him and he died on the scene.
The shooting follows another one, which took place on Saturday, 3 June, in this very same hostel, where nine people who were boozing in one of the rooms were shot. Seven died on the scene, one died later in hospital, and one sustained a wound.
A dweller who asked not to be named told Daily Sun that since he does not work, he will not leave his room.

"I'm scared that if I leave my room, I might get shot because it looks like there are people out to kill," he said.
Another hostel dweller said the nine people who were shot were just having drinks and not bothering anyone, but they were shot at.
"The man shot on Wednesday, 7 June, was on his way to work. I don't understand why he was also killed," she said.
She said this is frightening and maybe the only way to stay alive is to stay in their rooms because people are being shot and killed for nothing.
The KZN Police spokeswoman Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the matter saying police in Umlazi are investigating a case of murder following an incident where a 30-year-old man was allegedly fatally shot by unknown suspects on 7 June 2023 at Umlazi near Ezimbuzini and Glebelands hostel.
"It is alleged that the victim was ambushed by suspects who fired shots towards him, fatally wounding him at the scene. Reports indicate that the deceased was on his way to work when he was murdered," said Constable Ngcobo.
