NEWLY appointed KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube has pledged to work with all spheres of government to ensure accountability and transparency.
Dube-Ncube made history when she was sworn in as the first-ever female premier of the province on Wednesday, 10 August.
She was nominated by new provincial ANC chairman Siboniso Duma, who recently beat former premier Sihle Zikalala in a hotly contested elective conference.
Zikalala, who didn’t even make it to the provincial executive council, offered to resign.
Although the new party leadership tried to persuade him to stay until the 2024 election, he chose to step down.
Speaking at a special sitting of the provincial legislature, Dube-Ncube said: “The whole country is celebrating the fact that the ANC has made a conscious decision to ensure the sixth premier under its banner is a female.”
She vowed not to get rid of the premier’s staff who worked with Zikalala.
“We will deepen our democracy by creating space for ordinary members of society, civil society and human rights activists to partner with government to improve and assess the quality of service delivery using Operation Sukuma Sakhe as a tool,” she said.
Addressing the legislature, Duma said Dube-Ncube’s election was a demonstration that the governing party was committed to the liberation of women.
