KZN MEC for Finance Nomusa Dube-Ncube has been announced as KZN’s premier nominee by the ANC’s new leadership.

This follows Sihle Zikalala’s resignation as the premier of the province.

Dube-Ncube, known as a game-changer, will be the first ever female premier of KZN in history.

The news was announced by KZN’s new leadership in the ANC’s provincial head offices in Durban on Monday, 8 August.

She didn’t get enough votes to contest for the chairmanship position at the recent KZN ANC conference where Sboniso Duma won, defeating Zikalala. This position will wipe her tears.

Dube-Ncube was interviewed by the ANC’s National Executive Committee on Friday, alongside Amanda Bani-Mapena and Mbali Frazer.

Dube-Ncube, who is a former KZN MEC for the Department of Co-Operative Governance, said she accepted the deployment by the ANC and also thanked the trust the governing party showed her that has enabled her to lead a collective of government.

“I am, indeed, going to work with the ANC leadership, as well as all my colleagues in government, to ensure that we deal with the crippling issues that are still face the province.

“Dealing with the socio-economic challenges that we are facing in the province and the high rate of unemployment.

“The interview was quite intense. It took more than an hour and really dealt with the policies that the ANC seeks to achieve,” she said.

“Right now, we are in the month of August and I’m sure our leaders like mama Mxenge, mama Dorothy Nyembe, mama Winnie and many of our leaders are rejoicing that during this month the ANC, as the champion of non-racialism and non-sexism, is ensuring that our women are given a responsibility to lead.

“I commit that I will not disappoint the people of the KZN,” she said.

KZN ANC new secretary Bheki Mtolo said Zikalala was never pushed to resign, but made an offer to them as the leadership which they declined.

“He made much persuasion which compelled this leadership to accede to his decision as our senior and a cadre of our movement.

“As much as we disagreed with his offer to resign, as the premier, we felt it is important that we consider his decision and respect it,” he said.

He added that this was a crucial day for the ANC as they made history by introducing and unveiling the first women premier-elect to the people of KZN.

“We know that non-sexism is embedded in the ANC’S very core mission. We pride ourselves that during Women’s Month as the ANC in KZN we have moved to the realisation of this movement’s founding principle.”
