KEEPING happy faces in and around the country during Mandela Day on 18 July did not last long.

For Joburg alone experienced three explosions that reduced the City of Gold to rubble.

On Wednesday, 19 July, an underground explosion in the Joburg CBD caused significant damage to Lilian Ngoyi Street formally known as Bree Street, the busiest taxi street in the city.

The explosion killed one person and injured 41 others. Extensive inspections and investigations by technical experts revealed that the explosion was triggered after methane, natural gas and gas from a commercial gas pipeline mixed in the stormwater drainage system.

Just when the city had processed the terrible scenes in which Bree Street was torn open and vehicles were damaged, some of which were thrown off the road by the force of the explosion.

Another explosion stuck on Thursday, 20 July , in Braamfischerville, where a dynamite connected to a battery caused the explosion.

One person died, one was taken to the hospital for treatment, and the other suffered minor injuries.

Then came the news of a 48 kg gas cylinder that exploded at a factory in Chloorkop in Kempton Park on Friday, July 21 July.

Police said the incident occurred at a farm in Hennenman in November 2020, and News24 reported that a case has been opened for intimidation and assault.
