WHAT started out as a weekend filled with song and dance ended in tragedy for the ANC.
They started the weekend on a high note with their manifesto launch at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, 23 February, which was packed. However, it ended with the death of nine ANC members.
During the manifesto launch, ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa made promises for a better South Africa.
"Over the next five years, we'll implement a jobs plan. We'll create 2,5 million work opportunities," he said.
He promised to also tackle the high cost of living by taking steps to make everyday life more affordable for workers and the unemployed.
On Sunday morning, 25 February, Mzansi woke up to the news that some of the people from the manifesto were involved in an accident on R33 near Dumbe, KZN.
The bus was ferrying members from Mpumalanga and four people sustained critical injuries, 22 sustained serious injuries, while 28 suffered minor injuries.
In Gauteng, a 38-year-old man was arrested after injuring three cops. Police received a complaint about a wife and children who were held hostage by the husband in Klopperpark, Bedfordview.

When the cops arrived, the suspect fired shots, injuring the cops and a family friend who was in the house. The suspect eventually released all the other victims and surrendered himself to the police.
He will be charged with four counts of attempted murder, kidnapping and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The police in Free State have made a breakthrough in the murder of famous businessman, Andries Mgoqi. He was shot dead in front of his tavern on Friday, 16 February. It is alleged that Mgoqi was with his friend outside the tavern when a man approached them and shot him multiple times.
The cops said they received intelligence information that led them to a house in Wepener where two suspects aged 34 and 33 were arrested.
In what seems to be a miracle, police in Mpumalanga recovered a car that was stolen in the Eastern Cape 14 years ago.
Cops were doing vehicle verification on the white Toyota Corolla and it transpired that the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the licence disk did not correspond with the VIN on the body of the vehicle.
They further investigated and the outcome indicated that the vehicle was reported stolen in Komani (Queenstown) in the Eastern Cape in December 2010.
On a lighter note, iconic sports commentator, Baba Mthethwa launched a new training programme called Nayi Le Voice – the footsteps of Baba Mthethwa, on Saturday, 23 February in Kagiso, Krugersdorp.
He will be travelling to all provinces in search of the next Baba Mthethwa.
