THE weekend started on a bittersweet note as the country mourns Zoleka Mandela after battling metastatic cancer.

She was buried on Friday, 29 September, at the Fourways Memorial Park in Joburg, which saw Zoleka cousin, Mandla, finally speaking out after facing backlash from Mzansi.

This was not the only death South Africans had to mourn. ANC veteran and anti-apartheid activist Aziz Goolam Hoosein Pahad was buried on Saturday, 30 September.

He died on 27 September at the age of 82.

It seems as though the weather has been in the countryside as a fire broke out in Richards Bay, KZN at the NCT Woodchip Mill on Saturday, 30 September, amid extremely hot and windy conditions.

Yet another fire followed in the inner city of Joburg on Sunday, 1 September.

Joburg Emergency Management Services responded to the fire that broke out on the corner Mirriam Makeba and Jeppe streets behind Bree Taxi Rank.

According to the recuse team, recycling material and a lapa caught fire but were immediately extinguished. No fatalities were reported.

Western Cape police are investigating a mass shooting in Gugulethu on Saturday, 30 September.

Five people, including Warrant Officer Lindela Mraqisa, a protector of deputy police minister Cassel Mathale were killed during the unfortunate incident.

Meanwhile, in Mfuleni, Cape Town, an off-duty policewoman was found dead after a night out with friends.

Load shedding is expected to be suspended until 4pm on Monday, 2 October when stage 2 load shedding will be implemented, Eskom announced on Sunday.

On the entertainment news, the MultiChoice Group won the most awards at this year's South African Film & Television Awards (Saftas), with productions such as Legacy, Lavish, MTVShuga: What Makes a Man, Gomora, and The River winning awards.

The awards took place on Friday and Saturday in Midrand. Lawrence Maleka, who hosted the awards alongside Zozibini Tunzi, won Best Actor in a telenovela for his role as Zolani on The River.

Finally, the Springboks beat Tonga 49-18 on Sunday night, 1 October, marking a significant victory for the country.
