THE University of Cape Town’s vice chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng’s dance moves have left social media abuzz.

This is after she posted a video of herself celebrating after she won the prestigious Africa Education Medal on 7 September.

This is a medal awarded to an outstanding individual who has demonstrated impact, leadership and advocacy in the field of education.

The video posted recently was captioned: “Mood after winning the #AfricaEduMedal.”

On the video, Phakeng is seen typing on her computer and then abruptly standing up.

She then shows her followers some fancy dance moves as she dances to Ami Faku’s hit song, Asibe Happy.

The finalists of the coveted award included former Tanzania president Jakaya Kikwete.

Phakeng has received congratulatory messages from various people, including Oprah Winfrey.

Oprah said Phakeng deserves the medal as she had demonstrated her prowess in the education sector.

“Congratulations to you, Professor, on being named the winner of the Africa Education Medal. It’s an honour recognising leaders who are making a positive impact on education.

“I don’t know anyone who deserves it more because I’ve witnessed firsthand your support of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in South Africa and how your vision, passion and commitment have made such a difference in the lives of so many students.

“I honour the vital work that you do with education and I celebrate you as a forward-thinking, visionary leader for such a time as this. Congratulations and blessings on your life,” said Oprah in a video recording.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said Phakeng is a great leader.

“The Africa Education Medal recognises the importance of education in transforming a country, helping to lift people out of poverty and addressing inequality.

“This is what Professor Phakeng stands for: helping those who are less fortunate to rise above their circumstances and achieve their goals,” said Winde.

Former UCT vice chancellor Dr Mamphela Ramphele also congratulated Phakeng.

“Congratulations to my sister, Mamokgethi Phakeng. She is a dedicated visionary leader in education. As a leader of UCT, she has led courageously in a difficult national context.

“May she grow from strength to strength and model what transformative feminine leadership looks like,” she said.
