FIVE robbers were killed following a shoot-out with cops on the N2 in KZN on Wednesday, 27 July.

According to Brigadier Jay Naicker, in the early hours of the morning, a gang of eight men arrived in two vehicles at a mall in Empangeni.

“They held up the security guard and broke into a shop at the mall. The suspects stole clothing and other items before fleeing the scene. A security company was notified and alerted other role-players to indicate that the cars were travelling towards Durban,” Naicker said.

He said that various security companies and police officers joined in on the chase and a shoot-out ensued at the Tongaat toll plaza as the suspects fired on their pursuers.

“Both vehicles lost control and overturned along the N2 near King Shaka International Airport. Five suspects died in both cars while two sustained serious injuries,” Naicker said.

The police arrested the eighth suspect as he fled the scene, where three firearms and housebreaking equipment were found in the vehicles.

“The suspects will be profiled to establish if they are linked to other crimes. Dockets for armed robbery, attempted murder as well as illegal possession of firearms and ammunition will be opened,” Naicker said.

Two suspects are in critical condition in hospital while the third one is expected to appear in court soon.
