A BURST sewerage pipe has made life miserable for Thembi Shabangu.
This is because her yard smells like kak and she is worried about being exposed to diseases.
The 46-year-old from Westonaria, Rand West City, said it was a serious matter and not something she could just ignore or postpone.
“My concern is the health risks because this has been going on for a while. One of my children is asthmatic and this could potentially harm her,” she said.
“Why did the municipality install these sewerage pipes in our yards when they knew they wouldn’t attend to us when we sought help?”
Thembi said she had been keeping her children from playing outside and would continue until the waste was removed and the yard was throughly cleaned.
“Not only am I dealing with the sewage but there are worms I have to deal with as well,” she said.
She said one of her children recently fell in the sewage.
“This happened when she was rushing to go to school and she had to come back inside the house to change.
“I can’t do laundry because I can’t go outside to dry the clothes,” she said.
“I tried to report the matter to the municipality several times but haven’t received any help.
“As far as sewage is involved, the municipality usually deals with it immediately. Why must I be treated like this?”
Thembi said the community had a WhatsApp group where they discussed basic service delivery issues.
She said a community leader raised the issue with the municipality but there was no response.
Daily Sun contacted Councillor Nontombi Molathlegi, who said she escalated the matter and was dealing with it.
