THE National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has issued a warning about a post regarding pit bulls that appears to be a scam.
This comes after a recent post from an unverified government Twitter account offered a “reward” of R1 500 to anyone who reports households that are keeping pit bulls.
In a statement shared on Facebook, the council said the post is highly questionable since it comes from an unverified account and has no contact details.
“It further contains no information as to why the pit bulls are being sought after to the point that a reward has been offered. The post places pit bulls and their owners at risk. If you have come across the post, please report it,” the statement read.
The council said there are suspicions that people are trying to impersonate SPCA personnel and thus asking people to hand their pit bulls over to them.
“This is also a scam. The SPCA is not going door-to-door and demanding that people hand over their pit bulls,” the statement added.
The public is urged not to hand over their animals to unknown people and take their animals to a local SPCA facility if they can’t look after their pets.
