THE bodies of the two people who were washed away during a cleansing ritual at the Klip River in Olifantsvlei, south of Joburg have not yet been found.
This was confirmed by the City of Joburg Emergency Medical Services as they continued their search on Monday morning, 20 November.
According to EMS spokesman Robert Mulaudzi, the two, an 18-year-old girl and a 21-year-old man, were washed away on Saturday night, 18 November, during a cleansing ritual.
"We started the search on Sunday morning, which lasted all day until 5pm. It's suspected that two missing people were washed away during a cleansing ritual that was performed on Saturday night.
Mulaudzi said the chances of finding them were slim. He said they still have a long distance to cover as it's almost 10 kilometres long.
This is not the first incident where people have been swept away by water. Previously, Daily Sun reported on the recovery of the body of an 18-year-old teenager who slipped and drowned in the Klipvalley River in Kliptown, Soweto, on Tuesday, 14 November.
The body was discovered by a diving team from Joburg Emergency Services at 10.52am on Wednesday, 15 November.
In 2022, nearly 15 church members were swept away by a flash flood in the Jukskei River. They went to the river to pray while other community members gathered for a baptism ceremony.
Mulaudzi expressed concern over the increasing cases of people being swept away while crossing rivers or performing rituals.
The search for the two is set to continue on Tuesday morning, 21 November.
