According to Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, in the early hours of the said day, cops from the national intervention unit received a tip-off about a man in possession of firearms.

Cops proceeded to Farewell Street in Empangeni, where all necessary measures were taken to gain access to the house, but the owner refused them entry.

“Officers were met by a hail of bullets, leading to a shoot-out. The home owner, aged 45, and his security guard (36) died at the scene,” Ngcobo said in a statement.

She said cops seized four rifles (including two AK-47s), a shotgun, five pistols, revolver and 397 rounds of ammunition. Charges of attempted murder, inquest as well as unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition were opened for investigation,” Ngcobo added.
