TWO of seven convicts, who escaped from the Makhanda Correctional Services centre on Tuesday, 18 October, have been rearrested after a 72-hour activation plan.
As previously reported by Daily Sun, it is alleged that at about 4am, an officer arrived for standby duties at the prison when she saw lights on in one of the units.
According to Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, the breakthrough was made on the same day when an escapee, Bennet Kwarrie, was rearrested in Bloemfontein.
“On Wednesday at around 10pm, a joint task team between the SAPS and Correctional Service officers rearrested the second inmate near Committees. The recaptured inmate, Simba Masinga, was nabbed while hiding in the bushes. His arrest brings down a total of escapees, who are still at large, to five,” Nkohli said in a statement.
He added that escapees were dangerous, and urged the public to call the police if they were spotted anywhere.
“We also urge communities not to protect these criminals as they will be committing an offence if found to be aiding and abetting them,” he added.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of these criminals has been urged to contact Detective Captain Glen Peter at 082 301 9427 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
