EASTERN CAPE police have launched a manhunt after seven prisoners escaped from Makhanda Correctional facility on Tuesday, 18 October.
According to Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, it is alleged that on Tuesday, 18 October, at about 4am, an officer arrived for standby duties at the prison when she saw lights that were on in one of the units.
“It was discovered that seven prisoners escaped through a window. The circumstances surrounding the incident are forming part of the investigation,” Nkohli said.
The escaped prisoners have been identified as Nhamo Muyambo, Francis Chitho, Trymore Chauke, Lubuyo September, Abraham Moyane, Simba Masinge and Bennet Kwarrile.
New24 reported that September is a South African national, who was held for charges of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and robbery.
The other six escapees are Zimbabwean nationals who were detained for rhino poaching.
The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene has since implemented a 72-hour activation plan following the incident.
“Police opened a case of escaping from lawful custody for further investigation. Police are warning the community that these prisoners are dangerous and should not be approached. Instead, police must be contacted,” Nkohli said.
He urged communities not to protect these criminals as they would be committing an offence if found to be aiding or hiding them.

DCS spokesman Singabakho Nxuma said the men are considered to be dangerous and should not be confronted if spotted, information should be shared with the nearest Police Station.
