THE prison cells are so flooded with kak and water that awaiting-trial prisoners can’t be kept in them.

Justice department employees say they have raised their concerns over the Odendaalsrus Magistrates Court with senior Free State officials with no response.

An employee told Daily Sun the situation was dangerous for everyone. “The building belongs to the Department of Public Works. It has been reported more than once without response,” said the employee.

“Files containing important information were destroyed by the sewage.”

The SunTeam has learnt the building was closed by the health department but reopened without any of the problems being solved.

The police office that is used to manage the detainees can’t be used because it is also flooded.

National justice department spokesman Chrispin Phiri said: “We have nothing to do with the maintenance of the building. We are tenants.”

Provincial public works spokesman Motale Sebego said all major construction projects were handled by the national department.
