MADALA Simon Hlungwane (72) and his best friend Norman Ngubeni (78) have been friends for 40 years.

The best friends from Makhulong section in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, said they're both from Limpopo and came to Joburg in the 70s looking work.

From a distance, one would think they were in their early '60s, and Simon said most people don't believe them when they say they're over 70.

"Some even say we look young because of our healthy bodies. We love our bodies, and we wish the youth could learn from us and stop smoking drugs and indulging in alcohol," said Simon.

He said they never worked at the same company, but they met on the buses that used to ferry them from Tembisa to Joburg.

"Our companies were on the same street, so we would meet in the morning as we went to work and, in the afternoon, going back home.

"The friendship grew, and we even visited each other where we lived in Tembisa, and our families also became friends," said Simon.

Norman said Simon is his confidant.

"Whenever I have a problem and need someone to talk to, Simon is the man. When they say in good times and bad times, you need a friend, that's how I can describe Simon.

"Even in darkest days, he's always there, so I'm so happy to have met him many years ago," said Norman.

Norman urged the youth to respect their parents and focus on their education.

"It's sad to hear there are parents out there who are being abused and assaulted by their children.

"The youth must learn and be better future leaders and support their parents," said Norman.
